It may well be a redundant plea if the damage that the storms currently lashing the UK proves to be as bad as some people are expecting, but nonetheless, the Environment Agency is urging the public to think carefully about employing "tree surgeons" who call at their door looking for work.
The warning comes following a series of complaints to the Environment Agency about workers who have been paid cash-in-hand to prune trees, but left without clearing up. Residents in the Leeds area have complained that tree "litter" has been left strewn across their gardens and on roads and pavements.
Mike Robotham, Agency Environmental Protection Officer, said: "We would urge anyone to think twice about employing "tree surgeons" that call on them without an appointment. Anyone who employs someone to do work on their home should also make sure that any waste is being disposed of properly. And if a member of the public witnesses waste being dumped illegally they can contact our Hotline on 0800 80 70 60 to report it."
West Yorkshire Trading Standards' advice is to choose a tree surgeon who regularly advertises in Yellow Pages or another business directory, or someone recommended by family and friends. Anyone wanting further advice, can contact their Consumer Helpline on 01133 848 848.
