While noise may still be one of the major sources of irritation and arguments between neighbours, a new poll suggests that selfish parking is now the most likely reason why your friendly neighbour will turn into public enemy number one.
The poll from Norwich Union insurance reports that 24% of people would put selfish car parking at the top of a list of 'nuisance neighbour attributes', thanks largely to an increase in the number of cars owned per household in this country.
In descending order, the other common complaints were:
- Loud pets were next on the list of gripes (15%)
- Noisy children (13%)
- Loud music (7%)
- Overhanging trees (7%)
- Disputes regarding rubbish (6%)
- Neighbours who argue between themselves (5%)
- Late night parties (3%)
- Loud love-making (1%)
- Nosey neighbours (1%)
Jill Willis, from Norwich Union Insurance, said: "It is surprising that car parking tops our list of disputes, but it reflects that a significant number of homes now have more than one car. Noise is still a sore point for many - including the sound of neighbours getting fruity.
Like any relationship, communication is key. We would always suggest if people have a problem or issue with their neighbours, they talk it through rather than letting it fester and then explode into an argument or even a legal dispute."
