Government says no to new green belt policy

Despite last week's calls from planning leaders, the government has insisted that it is not going to be changing its policy surrounding the development of green belt land.

On Friday last week, we reported how Michael Haslam, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), has called for consideration to be given to limited development on suitable sites in protected greenbelt land on the fringes of existing cities.

The consultation paper from the RTPI, 'Modernising Green Belts', argued that decisions surrounding the need for and size of green belts should be controlled at a regional level. Mr Haslam also claimed on Radio that the green belt policy, dating back to the 1950s, is now at odds with government desires to build sustainable housing. He believes that cities must to expand gradually outwards or else villages and market towns in surrounding areas will be overdeveloped.

But a spokeswoman for planning minister Lord Falconer has this week shut the door on any policy change, saying: 'There will be no change to the green belt policy. He has said this many times and the RTPI's comments will not change this.'
