Shares are doing better than property

Investment returns from UK equities outperformed other asset classes for the first five months of the year, show figures from the Investment Property Databank (IPD).

In its monthly report, the IPD stated that May was another strong month for the equity market, out-performing both gilts and property with a return of 4.4%. This has boosted the 3, 6 and 12 month figures, and as a result, equity returns are now positive over six months.

Gilts also had a good month, and have pulled away from the other asset classes over twelve months, achieving a return of 13.5%.

However, the total return on equities over 12 months is still negative at -17.6%. By contrast, investors in property investors gained 0.7 percent in May, having achieved a total return of 10.7 percent over the past 12 months.

The year-to-date picture shifted significantly since last month, says IPD. In April it was equities and gilts fighting for second place behind property. However equities have now taken the lead at 6% and it is property and gilts fighting for second, both achieving 3.9%.
