Whispered dinner party talk of how much one should be paying the 'lady who does' can now come out into the open. A new survey reveals that domestic cleaners around the UK are earning between £4.50 and £15 per hour. The average weekly wage packet is £30 for 4.5 hours work - equivalent to £6.70 per hour.
Today of course, professional home cleaners are just as often ‘men who do’ as ‘ladies who do’.
With 8% of UK households employing a cleaner, the total wage bill amounts to around £2.8 billion annually. The research – conducted for Morphy Richards by The Survey Shop - also discovered strong potential demand, 31% of those of us currently without a cleaner would like to have one.
The group most likely to want a cleaner is 30 to 44 year olds with 45% expressing an interest in having someone come in for a few hours.
A spokes-person from Morphy Richards comments: "This research has given us an interesting insight into UK attitudes towards household cleanliness. We were fascinated by the statistic that 69% of people in the UK don't want a cleaner.”
“Why? Is this a reflection on modern day attitudes - do we value privacy over cleanliness?"
The research also threw up an interesting statistic regarding types of vacuum cleaners. Only 18% of people employing a cleaner owned one of the bag-less types of machine, compared to 46% amongst those doing their own vacuuming.
