Neighbour from hell jailed - and released

Tuesday, April 27, 2004

A Dorset woman has been jailed for three months after continually harassing her neighbour. And having already served two months behind bars, the 49-year-old mother was immediately released to return to her bail hostel accommodation.

Sentencing Teresa Whitaker at Bournemouth Crown Court, Judge John Beashel said: "Your behaviour towards your neighbours was outrageous. You caused them continuous distress and fear.”

"You really were the neighbour from hell…Fortunately for them you have now left that property and they can enjoy a more normal existence."

Whitaker admitted harassing her next-door neighbours at Blackberry Lane in Christchurch for six months between March 21, 2003 and October 8, 2003.

The neighbour from hell had threatened the family, shouted abuse and banged on the adjoining walls as well as lashing out against her former neighbour, said Robert Hill, prosecuting.

Whitaker is staying in a bail hostel while negotiations for the sale of her semi-detached home in Christchurch are taking place. She has been banned from visiting the house except in respect of arrangements for the sale.
