Shower curtains are awash with potentially harmful micro-organisms reports a microbiologist at the University of Colorado, Boulder. And if you don’t wash them every few weeks you could be risking an infection, he says.
Each time you take a shower you are engulfed by an aerosol of the nasty bacteria, the researcher told the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Seattle.
In most cases, that will not be harmful. But if you have an unprotected cut, or your immune system is suppressed, it could spell serious trouble.
Norman Pace directed research that took scum from undergraduates’ and colleagues’ shower curtains and subjected it to DNA analysis. The results showed that around 80 percent of the bugs were from two troublesome groups that could infect wounds or harm people who are already weakened.
Pace suggests the bacteria feed on volatile organic chemicals shed from human bodies. "When you cough, belch or fart, you're putting a lot of organic chemistry in there,” he says.
And the problem is not limited to shower curtains either. The microbiologist advises staying away from your typical Jacuzzi, or hot tub too. Independent research has shown these are packed with bacteria that can cause lung infections.
