 Arboreal aberrations in suburban street

Wednesday, February 04, 2004

An eccentric mystery gardener has been plopping plucky tree saplings into people’s private plots in the dead of night.

Painstakingly digging six-inch holes in the borders of as many as 100 gardens, the mystery tree transplanter has planted 2ft 6in ash saplings all down a suburban street in Pembury, Kent.

The only clue left for the police, said the Daily Mirror newspaper, was a single muddy footprint.

The arboreal antics have baffled police who said, "We do not know where the trees have come from because they have not been reported to us as missing or stolen."

Resident Mary Roe said: "As I walked out the front door I saw the sapling. It would have taken them hours to do all the trees and the weather overnight was awful. I have not got a clue who would want to do this."

Not all the residents are happy about the unwanted additions to their planting schemes particularly after a local councillor warned the trees will soon grow to a massive 140 foot tall.

However, the Woodland Trust has offered a new home for any of the trees that are unwanted.
