Move to a challenging island way of life

Thursday, February 05, 2004

Fancy taking a real change of lifestyle? Off the coast of North Devon, you’ll find the tiny island of Lundy. There’s only around twenty people living there at the moment but soon there will be twenty-four.

The island’s general manager, Paul Roberts is advertising for two new recruits and with the positions go free accommodation for them and their partners or spouses.

Paul, who is looking for a handyman and a general assistant, said, “The people who usually apply are those who want a change and a challenge in their lives."

A challenge it certainly will be. The tiny three-mile by half-a-mile granite island sits almost in the Atlantic with nothing between it and America. There is only one shop, a church and a pub and the electricity goes off at night when the generator is turned off. They are hoping to build a wind turbine one-day, but at the pace of things on Lundy, that day may not be too soon coming.

Owned by the National Trust the island is a favourite haunt for birdwatchers, divers, climbers, plant enthusiasts, archaeologists and geologists. Volunteers, called Friends of Lundy, spend their holidays working on the island or fund raising.
