Insurers are bracing themselves for a spate of road accident claims during the snow expected this week, says the AA, the UK’s biggest home and car insurance broker.
The driver’s association is warning people to keep a cool head after an accident and collect your thoughts before getting out of your car. For example, there may be black ice around and just stepping out of your car after a minor incident could result in you slipping, with limb-breaking consequences.
“Whenever there is a cold snap, the number of claims always goes up,” says Neale Phillips, director of AA Insurance. “But the last time England and Wales suffered widespread snow and ice was in the winter of 1995-1996. Since then, 4.5 million new drivers have taken to the road and most will never have driven in such conditions.”
“Fortunately, most people respond by driving more cautiously so although there may be many bumps, most will be minor.”
The AA offers the following advice if you have an accident:
- Keep a cool head – collect your thoughts before getting out of your car. - Use your hazard warning lights. - Move the cars away from other traffic especially in ice.
- If there are injuries, you must call the police and ambulance (or ask a bystander to do so). - Offer first aid if you can or ask any bystanders to help.
- Use your insurance company help line it if you are uncertain what to do.
- Note make, model, colour and registration number of cars involved.
- Ask the driver’s insurance details, name and address and telephone number (if they refuse, call the police or ask someone to do so).
- Ask any witnesses for their contact details- Do not admit liability, even if you think it was your fault.
- Don’t put yourself in danger from other vehicles- Make a note of the road layout and signs, as well as the road conditions (It’s also a good idea to keep a disposable camera in your car).
- If you have to leave your car take any valuables with you.
- Tell your insurance company as soon as you can.
