Crossrail 'homes blight' lifted

Hundreds of property owners in Richmond and Kingston may have been saved from having their property blighted by the Crossrail link.

Crossrail confirmed for the first time today that the section of the rail line proposed to serve the London Boroughs of Richmond and Kingston will be axed to save the project £1 billion, making the project more affordable.

However, South-West London commuters will now be excluded from better access to Central London.

The line will now run from Heathrow in the West to Shenfield and Ebbsfleet in the East.

In the absence of confirmed government funding Crossrail told the London Assembly this week that the only way to close the £8 billion funding gap would be to find other ways to pay for the project, such as increasing fares, or by cutting back sections of the route.

Increasing fares to pay for the project could cost commuters dearly. Crossrail has told the London Assembly that the government’s estimate of a 1% increase in fares over the next seven years is not enough. Even a 10% increase would only raise £1.75 billion, making a small dent in the £8 billion funding shortfall.
