Family and finances are among the top five worries for millions of Britons who plan to move abroad, according to research from Alliance & Leicester International Limited, the offshore savings bank.

Four out of ten people surveyed say they aim to move abroad to work or live in the next ten years and a massive six million of us are planning to move to foreign shores by 2020. Yet those with a desire to up sticks and make the move still have some concerns about how they will adapt to their new lifestyle choice.

The biggest worries for Britons moving abroad are:

  • Missing their family (59%)
  • Logistics of moving abroad (47%)
  • Healthcare (45%)
  • Language barriers (37%)
  • Sorting out finances (33%)
  • Bringing up children (22%)
  • Making new friends (22%)
  • Cultural differences (17%)
  • Foreign cuisine (10%)

The bank has put together a guide, Your Complete Guide to Life and Work Abroad, which answers all the questions people may have before taking the big step. The guide provides an outline of the main things you need to consider in advance, what needs to be actioned before leaving the UK, the logistics of moving, lifestyle changes, important contacts and helpful websites.

The guide also includes:

  • Practical steps to finding schools

Simon Hull, Managing Director at Alliance & Leicester International commented: “More and more people are moving abroad to live and work, and they need to be aware of the many factors they should be considering both before they go, and after leaving Britain. Organising your finances is a particularly important issue and one that shouldn’t be forgotten.”

“One key area for people to consider when moving abroad is opening up a currency account. These have become more and more popular recently, especially with more and more people considering buying property abroad, moving abroad to work, or simply spending time in the USA or a Euro zone country.”

“Our guide aims to take people through the necessary changes step by step, looking at both lifestyle and financial implications, making the move to sunnier shores as stress free as possible.”
