 Green energy pushes up distribution prices

Electricity distribution companies in the UK will be allowed to raise their prices by an average of 1% next year, industry regulator Ofgem said today.

In following years the rise is to be capped to the rise in inflation.

The cost of moving electricity around the country adds up to about a quarter of the household bill and the rise is expected to add about 6p a month. But the variation between companies is wide and could add up to 11.9% next year in some areas.

The regulator had originally asked for a 2% cut in distribution costs but in a step-change, decided that the network, which had been built in the 1950's was crumbling and needed urgent replacement.

Ofgem also said the increasing demand for connection of renewable energy such as windfarms and combined heat and power generation was adding to the burden on the distribution companies.

The increase will also allow companies to meet additional tax and pension costs they face, Ofgem chairman John Mogg said.
