New research shows that not only does a celebrity neighbour push up house prices in an area but it ranks equally alongside a good takeaway and a place of worship on a house-hunter's wish list, say UK estate agents. It even scores higher than a thriving residents' association or a well run Neighbourhood Watch.
And according to the latest biennial Cappuccino Test Report commissioned by the One account, the current account mortgage specialist, estate agents may have a point. A quarter of estate agents think a celebrity neighbour adds around £4,000 to the value of a property and one in 25 think that an A-list celebrity can add up to £50,000.
The report also highlights the UK's celebrity hotspots as identified by estate agents:
-
London (apart from Chelsea) – home to Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, Jude Law and Madonna.
-
Manchester – Corrie actors and Cold Feet's John Thomson are residents.
-
Hale, Cheshire – footballing stars from Manchester United live there.
-
Surrey – the place cricketer Phil Tufnell and Sir Cliff Richard live.
-
Cotswolds – home to Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes.
-
South Devon – inhabitants include Rik Mayall, Jennifer Saunders and Billy Bragg.
-
Chelsea – home to Liz Hurley, Chris Evans and Hugh Grant.
-
North Cornwall – inhabitants include Rick Stein.
-
Home Counties – think Bob Geldof in Faversham and Posh and Becks in Hertfordshire.
-
Berkshire – Paul Daniels thinks "it's magic" living there.
The One account's David Ramsbottom said: "It seems the rise of celebrity in the UK is having an effect on where people are choosing to live."
"The kudos of living 'round the corner' from someone famous also adds real value to homes according to nearly a quarter of the estate agents we spoke to."
David thinks a One account can help make people's dreams come true one day. "Whilst we can't promise to make you a star we can help you live down the road from one," he said.
