 Gender specific property desirables

Friday, August 26, 2005

Men and women have a different agenda when looking for a new home but they do have one thing in common when looking for the perfect property – we all dream about getting steamy in the hot tub!

Both sexes voted a Jacuzzi or hot tub as the most desirable extra in a recent poll of consumers commissioned by The Property Investor Show.

The poll revealed that outdoor space, including a garden, balcony or roof terrace also ranked highly for both male and female respondents.

The remaining rankings however, served to prove the vast differences in what men and women desire in their home. Men typically plumped for flashy gadgets such as surround sound entertainment systems, while women were lured by celebrity-style walk-in wardrobes and integrated coffee machines.

The luxury of solid granite work surfaces was ranked low for both sexes, suggesting that landlords might be better off investing in more obvious extras than quality kitchen specification.

Surprisingly however, men showed themselves to be considerably more security conscious than women, ranking both underground parking and security in the top five.

Nick Clark, managing director of Homebuyer Events, organisers of the show, comments: "These survey results demonstrate the value of making sure your property has its own wow factor that will make it stand out from the crowd in a competitive market place."

"Tenants these days are expecting more for their money, and it seems a hot tub or a roof terrace could be enough to convince an undecided tenant that your property is the right one for them."
