New research shows that local authority planners are increasingly satisfied with the consultation carried out by mobile phone operators for base station sites.
MORI research carried out over the past five years shows positive improvement in all areas of consultation and information year on year. Four in five senior planners had seen an improvement in consultation by operators.
Seven in eight planners felt operators co-operated positively with requests for more information about planning applications and three-quarters of planners agreed the operators provided them with enough information about their plans for mobile base stations within their local authority area.
"Operators are successfully filling the information gap for planners that was identified five years ago," said Mike Dolan, executive director of the Mobile Operators Association.
"They are meeting planners’ expectations and delivering improved information and communication, both with local authorities and local communities," he said.
The survey also revealed that only three planning departments in ten have a dedicated telecoms officer.
There are over 60 million mobile phone subscribers in the UK. There are approximately 45,000 radio base station sites to support that use. Without a network of base stations in the right places mobile phones will not work.
