Barratt has started work on an important regeneration scheme in the heart of Romford, on the London/Essex borders.
The Axis offers almost 230 new homes in landmark contemporary buildings designed by award-winning architects Goddard Manton.
The development replaces the old Dolphin Centre, a 1980s leisure centre and pool in Romford town centre that closed to the public in 1995 after becoming unsafe through gale damage. In its place is a project featuring a centrepiece 15-storey elliptical tower, all on top of a large new Asda store.
Barratt Southern Chairman Clive Fenton said: "The Axis is another good demonstration of how dereliction and blight is being replaced with very high-quality, custom-designed mixed-use schemes."
"The old Dolphin Centre was a classic example of the sort of tired and outdated community buildings the government wants to see rejuvenated with mixed use schemes that bring residential life back to town centres and blends in new retail, commercial and leisure uses. The Axis does all this in a spectacular way."
The Axis comprises 229 one and two-bedroom apartments, all featuring fully-fitted kitchens complete with integrated appliances, plus fitted bathrooms and very large windows to maximise views. The vast majority of apartments will have a balcony or a terrace.
Also included will be a superb gymnasium for the exclusive enjoyment of residents. There will be limited private parking, some of it under the building, accessed through electronically-controlled gates, but residents will also have the opportunity to join a 'car club' enabling them to book and use pool cars. There will also be a 24-hour concierge to assist residents with day-to-day matters.
The Axis will also include a new-generation Asda superstore on the ground floor. The Liberty 2 shopping centre is adjacent, and Romford mainline railway station - with its 17-minute services to Liverpool Street - is within strolling distance.
Romford is one of north-east London's favourite shopping spots, with a large and flourishing market - established almost 800 years ago - alongside all the best High Street names as well as designer-label boutiques. The town also has an excellent range of bars, cafes, pubs and clubs.
Prices for one-bedroom apartments start at £179,995 and two-bedroom apartments from £229,995.
A show apartment will open in due course, but a sales office is already open on site from Thursday to Monday, 10.00am to 6.00pm - telephone 01708 752598
