Whether it's having to unpack furniture onto the front lawn or being unable to find the tea bags amongst your belongings, moving house is one of life's most stressful events.
In fact, a new report reveals nearly one in 10 Britons (9%) has made themselves ill due to the stress of moving house.
And two out of three movers said moving house was highly stressful. Only one in five claimed their big move ran like clockwork.
One in eight found it so stressful they've vowed never to move house again! It's not just the obvious things, though, that are stressing out the nation when moving house, according to Yorkshire Bank's findings.
One in eight admitted their blood pressure rocketed when they were unable to find the kettle and tea bags in their new home. And one in 10 parents had to deal with their children's tantrums, upset at having to move away from friends.
Women emerged from the bank's survey as the biggest worriers, with nearly one in three struggling to sleep the night before the big move. By comparison, just one in seven men felt the same way.
The worry, however, doesn't stop on moving day. One in four started worrying about paying the mortgage as soon as they'd moved in. No surprises then that half of home movers would like to pay off their mortgage as soon as possible, just to have one less thing to worry about.
Gary Lumby, head of retail at Yorkshire Bank said: "It's well known that moving house is really stressful. However, you'd think it would be the major things such as actually selling your home or exchanging contracts that would worry people the most. In fact it's often the little things - such as not being able to have a cup of tea - that can cause a lot of anguish!"
"Our research shows the pressure doesn't stop once you've moved - it continues for years in the form of mortgage repayments. That's why an Offset mortgage is so appealing to many. Not only does the money in your current account and savings account benefit from an excellent interest rate, but these amounts are offset against the mortgage debt you are paying interest on."
Other nightmare findings:
- One in seven (14%) arrived at their new home to find the existing occupant still moving out
- One in five (19%) found the seller had stripped the property down to the bare bones - even removing light bulbs!
- One in 10 (8%) have been unable to move in on time due to a last minute hold-up
- One in 10 (8%) have had to temporarily seek refuge in a hotel or bunk-up with friends or family because they've had nowhere to live after a planned move fell through
- More than one in 10 (11%) called an emergency handy man to carry out urgent repairs on their new home within the first few weeks of moving in.
Yorkshire bank have introduced a SmoothMove product that insures customers have somewhere to turn to when something goes wrong. Gary Lumby said: "There is nothing worse than something going wrong on moving day when you're already worked up in the first place. What SmoothMove does is give movers peace of mind that, should something go wrong on moving day, they won't be left in the lurch or, even worse, homeless!"
