The Environment Agency is celebrating the announcement that London will host the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Not only will it be a great sporting event in the capital but it also promises to bring huge environmental benefits to the East End.
The Olympic Games provides London with a unique opportunity to make a positive change to the quality of the local environment, biodiversity and green space with lasting benefits for local communities. From an early stage the Environment Agency has been working closely with the London Development Agency putting together a bid which focused on sustainability both during the Games and after.
The river network currently suffers from back-facing buildings, poor public access, concrete banks and poor water quality. But the long-term vision now is for an integrated and sustainable community centred on a well-used and attractive river network.
Charlie Thompson, the Environment Agency’s project manager for the Olympic Games, said: "The regeneration of the Lower Lea has the potential to provide huge environmental benefits. Key to this regeneration is the remediation of contaminated land, the naturalisation of the river network and the restoration of areas of floodplain."
"The provision of open space for both public use and ecological enhancement will also make a significant contribution to the London Green Grid Network."
