Over a third of parents desperate for advice

Monday, March 21, 2005

Over a third (35per cent) of parents with young children feel desperate for parenting advice they can trust, and are confused about where to turn for information they can rely upon, a new NOPWorld survey shows.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) recently launched a new free magazine called Your Family and commissioned the poll to tie in with the launch.

The poll asked parents about their attitudes towards parenting advice and discovered:

  • 26 per cent of parents of children aged one-six years-old said they felt desperate for parenting advice they could trust
  • 27 per cent of these parents said they felt confused about what parenting advice to trust
  • Overall, 35 per cent felt both desperate for parenting advice, and confused about what advice to trust. 40 per cent of younger parents (aged 25-34) felt this way.

The findings echo the recent storyline in the hit show Desperate Housewives, as frazzled mother of four, Lynette struggles with the pressures of parenthood and her feelings of frustration, confusion and outright exhaustion.

Your Family Editor-in-Chief Eileen Hayes commented: "Bringing up children can be hugely rewarding and great fun. However, the NSPCC knows that raising children is a difficult job."

"Many parents have experienced situations and frustrations similar to Lynette in Desperate Housewives as well as similar feelings of isolation and confusion. We hear time after time from parents that they feel overwhelmed by just how difficult it can be. Your Family aims to provide trusted and quality parenting information in a reader-friendly format."

Your Family will be the UK's biggest parenting magazine with a circulation of 800,000.The free, quarterly magazine is aimed at parents of young children and parents-to-be.

The magazine aims to help mum and dads get the most out of parenting, and to present positive solutions. It includes top tips on bringing up happy children, advice on dealing with bullying, real-life new parent diaries and a guide to toddler behaviour, as well as news on celebrity parents, reviews of top toys and books, the latest fashion and quick and easy recipes for family meals.
