The average UK homeowner has lived in their current property for 14 years and appears to settle down into their long-term family home at the age of 38, according to new research published by online bank Egg. But before they reach that stage they buy an average of three properties.
When it comes to how far we move, however, the average Briton is not particularly adventurous, moving only 3 miles from their previous address. Some 48% of the UK's home moving population move no more than 5 miles, with a mere 13% moving more than 50 miles.
According to Egg's research, the average UK homeowner aged 50 and above appears to have moved into their current home at the age of 38, suggesting that it is by this age that the average homeowner has an established career and family and is seeking to settle down long term.

Despite the rising cost of getting on the housing ladder, UK homeowners claim that they most likely own three homes over their lifetime, with over a third (35%) claiming that they were likely to own between 3 and 5 properties.
Only 6% claimed that they would own more than five properties and a mere 1% anticipate owning 10 properties or more before settling down. Almost two thirds of homeowners claimed that their last property move was motivated more by aspiration than necessity (63%).
In fact, almost a quarter of all homeowners in the UK claimed that the key factor in their decision to move was the influence of televised property programmes and the pressure to keep up with and impress family and friends (23%).
