'Fear factor' used to win insurance business

Thursday, May 26, 2005

Household Insurers in the UK are using 'fear factor' to try to attract business from the wealthy, claims a new market report.

New research by independent market analyst Datamonitor reveals that many covers introduced by household insurers to attract wealthy customers could be little more than gimmicks.

The business information company said some insurers are introducing cover for stalking, road rage, car jacking, aggravated burglary and kidnap to attract High Net Worth individuals who may feel at risk from these types of crime.

However, despite recent media coverage of burglary incidents involving wealthy, high profile individuals such as Cilla Black and Ozzy Osbourne, it is Datamonitor's view that there is little evidence of a genuine need for these types of cover.

"Insurers are using new covers as low-risk product differentiators in what is an increasingly competitive market, safe in the knowledge that they will rarely have to pay out on such claims," comments James Greenwell, financial services analyst at Datamonitor and author of the report.
