The UK is a nation of ‘it has to be new’ nest-builders, it seems. Brand new furniture and electrical goods are a must-have for over half of UK home-movers, according to a new survey.
Over half (52%) of people who have moved home in the last 12 months say that most items in their home are brand new, with only 6% saying that they have settled for second-hand goods.
The current trend replicates shopping habits last seen in the ‘you’ve never had it so good’ days of the 1950s, when three in ten (29%) people in the UK made sure their home was fitted out with brand new furniture. Fifty years on over a quarter (27%) of us say all our furniture "has to be new."
In comparison, only 17% of those who bought homes in the 1960s and 21% of those who bought in the 1980s chose all new goods for their homes.
Women who have recently moved are also first to the shops, with over half (58%) purchasing brand new items over second hand-goods, compared to 45% of men.
Gary Fitton, Head of Post Office® credit card, commented: "Our survey shows that when people say they have a new home, they mean this literally both inside and out."
"Only 6% of people said they’d be happy with second-hand goods in their new home, opting to furnish their houses with brand new furniture and fittings."
The survey also showed that almost six in ten people (57%) use their credit cards to make purchases of furniture and electrical goods such as fridges and TVs.
Gary added: "We found that on average three-quarters of credit card holders make a purchase of between £500 and £2,000 around three times a year. The Post Office 2 in 1 credit card is ideal for buying items for the home. It offers all the benefits of a competitive credit card, combined with an easy budgeting tool, allowing larger purchases to be transferred to a lower, fixed rate, loan like facility on the card."
