Are you an unnecessary internet dinosaur?

Friday, March 10, 2006

Six million UK homes are still wasting time and money with dinosaur dial-up connections. These people are missing out on a service that’s ten times faster and that only costs an extra £2.50 by not switching from dial-up to broadband.

By not switching to broadband these users are losing out in terms of both time and money, warns independent broadband comparison and switching service uSwitch.com.

With average broadband speeds up to 20 times faster than antiquated dial-up connections, broadband users can download a wealth of information and feature-rich content that is currently beyond the reach of dial-up users – as well as being able to use the phone while online.

Blair Wadman, broadband product manager at uSwitch.com said: "A key factor in understanding why so many consumers still haven’t upgraded to broadband is apathy."

"Other users are simply afraid that they don’t use the internet enough to justify changing their connection."

"However, the availability of monthly broadband contracts means that consumers can experience the benefits of broadband without tying themselves down to a twelve month contract."

Many internet users are still unaware of these contracts, which are available from a number of providers such as Virgin, PlusNet, V21 and EFH Broadband.

Blair Wadman continued: "The rolling monthly contracts should be viewed as an opportunity to ‘try-before-you-buy’. If you don’t feel you are getting significant benefits, you can always revert back to your old dial-up connection. However, for what is little more than an additional £2.50 a month, users can experience the benefits of faster speeds and an ‘always-on’ connection."

"If they do decide to sign up it will make the task of choosing the right twelve month contract easier, as they will have a good idea of what their usage requirements are, saving themselves both time and money."

Broadband prices for a twelve month contract start from as little as £9.99 per month, whilst a one month contract starts from £14.99 - so contrary to the popular misconception among dial-up users that broadband is much more expensive, you don’t need to break the bank to enjoy the benefits of broadband.
