New figures show a continued improvement on building on pre-used land for the eighth year in a row.

Key figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government show that in 2005 77% of new dwellings were built on previously-developed land. (But that includes conversions.) This exceeds the target level of 75% and has been applauded by environmental campaigners.

The figures are generated by Ordinance Survey investigations and so are considerably out of date. The figures compare with 70% in 2003 and 74% in 2004. Before 1997 the level fluctuated around 57%.

The highest rate of land re-use was in London (98%), followed by the North West (84%), with the lowest rate, (59%), in the East Midlands.

The revised data also revealed that in 2005 housing was built at a density of 40 dwellings per hectare, unchanged from 2004 but well above the 1996-2001 rate of 25 per hectare.
