Some homes to get release from hosepipe ban

Thursday, January 18, 2007

The South East's record two-year drought, the worst for 73 years, has been declared over by four water companies, relieving nearly 13 million customers from the hosepipe ban.

Four water firms in the south east of England are lifting their hosepipe bans, Thames Water, Southern Water, Three Valleys Water and Sutton and East Surrey Water have all said their customers can now use hosepipes again.

However, consumers are warned that the situation is still marginal. Despite the wet autumn and winter so far, groundwater levels are still low in parts of the South East and it is too early to say the drought is completely over.

Underground water sources in some areas still need more time to fill, so the ban remains in place for customers of South East Water and Mid Kent Water who serve more than two million residents of Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire.
