Mainstream society households getting greener

2006 saw an increase in concerns about the environment from mainstream society households, according to market researchers, Mintel.

More householders started taking small steps to cut down their carbon footprints - such as doing more recycling and turning off appliances.

However, some environment-hitting habits such as holidays and car travel are proving harder to break, it seems.

About 55% of the 2,200 people surveyed for the Mintel and YouGov report stepped up their recycling during the year, and 53% started turning off all lights and appliances to save energy.

The researchers found women and the over 50s have made the biggest shift towards greener lifestyles during 2006.

However, only 11% of respondents cut down on car travel to save energy and just 2% said they had reduced air travel because of its environmental impact.

Mintel spokeswoman Helen Osman said: "2006 has proved to be a tipping point for the eco-warrior, as environmental issues and greener lifestyles have gone mainstream."

The report predicted that the distance food ingredients are transported - known as food miles - will be the hot environmental topic of the next few years.
