 Home-buyers stick with tradition

Friday, June 15, 2007

Terraced homes remain the most popular choice with British homebuyers, reports email4property.co.uk, which has recorded a continuing demand and high level of sales for terraced property throughout the UK’s principal cities...

Land Registry data published by email4property.co.uk shows that terraced homes top the list of sales in nearly all of the UK’s 20 largest cities, with semi-detached homes often coming second as the most popular property type in locations throughout the country.

Following a period of intense supply of new apartments, the tide began to turn in 2006 as house builders attempted to redress the balance throughout the country in favour of much needed family housing.

This move was supported by Housing Minister Yvette Cooper and individual homebuyers, with calls for more family friendly accommodation and the revival of the terraced home.

In areas such as Liverpool, which have recently experienced major inner city development and large numbers of high density apartment schemes, terraced homes have continued to make up the bulk of property sales.

Symbolic of ‘the British way of life’

In 2006, terraced homes accounted for 46% of sales in Liverpool, 37% in Leeds, 35% in Sheffield and 42% in Bristol.  David Bexon, Managing Director of email4property comments:

“Terraced homes are symbolic of the British way of life, particularly in the larger northern cities, and wherever possible, British homebuyers still seem to favour a more traditional style of home.

“Terraced properties also present a property ownership cycle which keeps them in constant demand.  They frequently provide a first or second step on the property ladder for young buyers, many of whom may return to these homes to downsize upon retirement or when children leave home.”

In its recent house price index, email4property.co.uk revealed the popularity of the terraced home in Britain is also extended to a number of the country’s smaller towns, cities and holiday hotspots, where terraced homes remain a preference among second home purchasers and retirees.
