The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has stated that the increased popularity of private selling among homebuyers poses no real threat to estate agents, arguing that demand for professional agents will remain strong...
NAEA chief executive Peter Bolton King says that professionals will continue to be able to find clients, despite an increase in DIY home sales and the increased profile of the internet in making these channels available to ordinary homeowners.
Figures from the NAEA state that of more than 1.2 million properties sold each year in the UK some 94 per cent are sold via an estate agent.
Meanwhile over quarter (27 per cent) of agents say that they have been approached by sellers who attempted to sell a property in the past month, but failed.
"We have noticed a marginal increase in the number of people attempting to sell property privately over the last few years," remarked Mr Bolton King.
"There will always be strong demand for good, professional agents who can provide expert guidance and support for consumers."
