Ambitious regeneration plans for a 150-acre site in Liverpool include proposals for a series of 'iconic' buildings, some up to 50 storeys high, designed to give the city a waterfront rivalling New York, Dubai, Shanghai and Vancouver.
The £5.5 billion scheme unveiled for Liverpool follow the announcement last September of a £4.5 billion Wirral waterfront redevelopment and will, according to Peel - owners of Mersey Docks & Harbour Company and Liverpool John Lennon Airport – see Liverpool become an ocean gateway to the North West, an international waterside destination to rival other world-beating waterfront cities.
Each building will be individually designed by leading architects from around the world to ensure a mix of iconic styles and will bring a massive increase in the number of tourists, tens of thousands of new jobs and inward investment to the area.
Among the elements of the 21million sq ft mixed use development are plans for a monorail to connect to John Lennon Airport, four hotels, up to 23,000 homes, an additional cruise liner terminal, a marina, public open spaces and a new pedestrian bridge across the Mersey.
Outline planning applications for both schemes are expected later this year.
