With the recent Christmas travel chaos it would be wise for travellers to plan ahead for all eventualities when it comes to packing...

And when it comes to travel essentials, it seems that nothing creates that fresh feeling more than a toothbrush and a clean pair of underwear.

Sparkling teeth and clean knickers were rated as the most important travel items to beat a dishevelled appearance, according to over-50s holidaymakers.

Asked to forego one essential item when on a trip, just 2 per cent said they could do without a toothbrush.

Only 5 per cent reckoned they could get by without underwear, and only 9 per cent would willingly dispense with deodorant.

In contrast, as many as 59 per cent said they could make do without a hairdryer, while 23 per cent thought they could manage without make-up, according to the poll.

Olivia Skeen, marketing manager of Staysure.co.uk, who commissioned the poll, said: 'Throwing caution to the wind for the experienced holidaymaker clearly doesn't extend to leaving behind their smalls.

'As weight restrictions increase and more and more people are travelling with carry-on baggage, people are being forced to choose between essentials when packing for their holiday.'
